Chicken biryani is a popular South Asian dish that is loved by people all around the world. It is a flavorful and aromatic rice dish that is made with layers of fragrant basmati rice, tender chicken pieces, and a blend of aromatic spices. This article will provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to make chicken biryani at home.
Ingredients:
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 500g chicken, cut into small pieces
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1 tbsp ginger paste
- 1 tbsp garlic paste
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 2-3 green chillies, chopped
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp garam masala powder
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 cup chopped coriander leaves
- 1/2 cup chopped mint leaves
- 1/2 cup fried onions
- 3-4 tbsp ghee or oil
- Salt, to taste
For the marinade:
- 1 cup yogurt
- 1 tbsp ginger paste
- 1 tbsp garlic paste
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- 1 tsp cumin powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp garam masala powder
- Salt, to taste
Instructions:
1. Wash the rice thoroughly and soak it in water for 30 minutes. Drain the water and keep the rice aside.
2. In a bowl, mix the chicken pieces with the marinade ingredients and keep it aside for 1-2 hours.
3. Heat ghee or oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. When they start to crackle, add the thinly sliced onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
4. Add ginger paste, garlic paste, and green chillies. Sauté for a minute.
5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft and mushy.
6. Add coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala powder, turmeric powder, and red chilli powder. Mix well and cook for a minute.
7. Add marinated chicken pieces and cook until they are tender and cooked through.
8. Add chopped coriander leaves and mint leaves. Mix well and turn off the heat.
9. In a large pot, boil water and add salt. Add the soaked rice and cook until it is 3/4th done.
10. Drain the water from the rice and spread it out on a plate to cool.
11. In a large pot or a biryani pot, layer half of the rice at the bottom.
12. On top of the rice, layer the chicken curry.
13. Layer the remaining rice on top of the chicken curry.
14. Sprinkle fried onions on top of the rice.
15. Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and cook on low heat for 20-25 minutes.
16. Turn off the heat and let the biryani sit for 10 minutes before serving.
Your delicious chicken biryani is now ready to be served. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve it hot with raita and salad. Enjoy!
